A little tool to check the condition and health of hard drives is CrystalDiskInfo, which is available for free download as an offline installation for Windows.
An overview of CrystalDiskInfo
This tool gives you an overall evaluation of the “health” of your drive and allows you to monitor the condition of hard drives that use SMART technology. It also shows comprehensive details (flash, serial number, standard interface, total time, etc.) about the hard disks that are installed in your computer. Additionally, it shows the characteristics of the SMART self-test parameters (read errors, performance, spindle start/stop, seek time, number of on/off cycles, mistakes, and many other sectors).
An HDD/SSD program called CrystalDiskInfo is compatible with SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology). This contains information about the drive’s current temperature, firmware version, number of unsuccessful read/write attempts, operating duration, frequency of starts and stops, and other characteristics. CrystalDiskInfo will notify you when certain parameters go close to danger thresholds, telling you it’s time to create backups while you can.
